2) Cancelled Dates: Due to other schedules at the I-Plex, sometimes skating lessons are cancelled or changed to Fairview Arenas (after the Iplex closes in mid March). As much advanced notice as possible will be given by email and by the front white board of changes.

There will be a separate sheet sent by email and handed out the first week of skating with all of that information.
3) Ice Show Date: March 12, 2016

4) Fundraising: Each skater is required to sell one book of raffle tickets for our fundraiser. Raffle tickets are $40 payable at registration night. There are no family discounts on fundraising. Fundraising is non- refundable. Tickets are to be handed in by November 1, 2015. Boxes will be available at the Iplex.

5) Volunteering: There is a $50 volunteer fee that will be payable on registration night. After fulfilling one volunteer duty per family, the fee will be returned.

6) Refunds: All refunds will be reviewed by the Executive and are subject to a $10 administration fee. Ice usage will be pro-rated. No refunds after December 16, 2015. Any withdrawals, problems, or concerns must be submitted in writing with a signature and date to the executive at the following address: Swift Current Skating Club, Box 503, Swift Current, SK, S9H 3W3.

7) Age Requirements: It is preferred that all skaters have supervision while at their lesson as it is not the coach’s responsibility to watch them when they are not in lessons. All skaters age 10 and under must be supervised by an adult while at skating lessons.

8) Ice time and Coaching: Ice time is sold to the skater in 1 hour blocks, numbered with #. Coaches will determine practice of freeskate, skills, dances, stroking, and figures.

9) Make Up Ice: If a skater is absent from a skating lesson or from an ice cancellation, skaters are allowed to make up ice time on a different day if arranged prior to the make up day and within a 2 week period by contacting their coach directly. If too many skaters are on the ice for safety reasons, priority will be given to regularly scheduled skaters.

10) Buy On Ice: Guest Skaters may buy ice time at $10.00/session/unit or non-club skaters at $15.00/session/unit. Payment must be received prior to going on the ice surface. Arrangements are made through a coach of your choice. There are envelopes at the rink that must be filled out with full payment and turned into the coach prior to the ice time selected.

Skaters that have their Gold Test in Dance may skate free of charge on dance sessions if they are partnering at the request of a coach.

11) Tests: When a skater moves up to the test stream, they begin at the preliminary level and move up through each level as tests are passed. Tests are as follows:

Skating Skills Freeskate Competitive Freeskate

Preliminary Preliminary Juvenile
Junior Bronze, Senior Bronze Junior Bronze, Senior Bronze Pre-Novice
Junior Silver, Senior Silver Junior Silver, Senior Silver Novice

Freeskate tests consist of two parts - elements in isolation and skating freeskate program. The complete freeskate test does not have to be passed before the next level may be tested. There are also competitive tests that can be taken.

The dance levels consist of three or four dances. The entire set of dances in one level must be passed before the next level can be tested, although it doesn't matter which order the dances are taken within a level.

2. Bronze Skater must have passed Introductory Interpretive.
3. Silver Skater must have passed Bronze Interpretive.
4. Gold Skater must have passed Silver Interpretive.

Test Day Dates:

High Test Days – January 8 and 9, 2016
Low Test Days – January 8 and 9, 2016

Skaters are required to pay test fees per test tried, prior to taking the test. Partnering and administration fees are extra.

Test Fees for the 2015-16 skating season are as follows:

Dances (all levels): $15.00 per test
Freeskate program (all levels): $20.00 per test
Interpretive Freeskate (all levels): $20.00 per test
Competitive Tests: $20.00 per test
Skills (all levels): $25.00 per test
Freeskate Elements (all levels): $35.00 per test

Coaching Fees for Test days: Coaches will bill you for a lesson for a test your child is taking. If the coach partners your child for a dance they will charge a partnering fee; and likewise, if anyone else partners your child a partner fee is applicable. Amateur skaters can not be directly paid for test partnering. It is permissible to give a gift to an amateur partner.

12) Competitions:

There are a number of competitions available for skaters to attend throughout the year. All have an entry fee that is paid by the skater. When a coach attends a competition with a skater, they will bill for a portion of their expenses. Be sure to discuss with your coach what your total expenses may be before committing to a competition, rather than receive bills later that you were not expecting. Competition information is distributed to the skaters by the coaches.

Inter Club Competitions: These competitions take place throughout our region. They are more localized and smaller scale, there is a freeskate event for almost everyone, plus other events such as interpretive and dance solos.

Provincial Inter Club Competitions: This is a qualifying event for the national interclub championships. Skaters who have competed at sectionals are not eligible to compete at this event. Skaters may enter freeskate, freeskate pairs, and dance pairs events.

Jean Normal FreeSkate and Dance Competition: The annual Jean Norman
Competition rotates amongst various centers throughout Saskatchewan each year.
This is an open competition attended by skaters from all over the province.
Skaters may enter freeskate, compulsory movement, freeskate pairs, dance pairs
or artistic events. This provides a great opportunity for various levels of skaters
to compete provincially.

Competition Tips:
-Stretched laces that are dry and clean (stretch laces so they do not stretch during events).
-Polish skates with no scuffs.
-Sharp blades with no nicks. Note: skates should be sharpened at least three weeks before an event not the day of or week before.
-Clean gloves with no holes in them.
-Track pants and jacket
-Two pair of tights with no runs or holes.
-Fitted skating dress that fits correctly. Note: because underwear peaks out of dresses, please refrain from wearing them during test day or competitions.
-For freeskate, make sure you have your back up and master copy of your solo with you and pick up afterwards. Each CD and case must have your name, event and time of music.
-You should be at a Test Day ¾ to 1 hour in advance to warm up and in case it is ahead of schedule.
-For competitions you should arrive 1 ½ -2 hours before your event to allow for registration and any time changes.

13) Care of Skates: It is recommended that skaters do not leave skate guards on their blades as they rust from the moisture. Skaters should wipe their blades off and then place cloth blade covers on them. If you have any questions about the fit or condition of your skates ask your coach.

Check skates for:
• All screws are in tight
• No grey lines going down the edge of sharpening (sign of dull blade)
• No buckles in the leather and no creases that is too deep
• All hooks are secure
• No rust, nicks or burrs in the blade
• Make sure that your blade has lots of sharpening left.
• Laces are in good shape
• Shellac bottom of boot for good water resistance.

14) Sharpening of Skates: Once you start skating you should check the sharpening every day. When you get your skates sharpened always go to the same person to get the same quality sharpening. Figure skates require special sharpening by a qualified skate sharpener. Skates can either be shipped on the bus, or with a friend who is traveling to that area. Please call to make arrangements before sending or shipping skates and ask your coach if you are unsure whether your child's skates need sharpening.

The following is a list of some qualified sharpeners:
* Russ Prossko: Saskatoon, SK (306) 384-0341
* Skates & Skirts Mossbank, SK (306) 354-2240
* Jason Girodat Shaunavon, SK (306) 297-3833

15) Skating Lessons – Points to Note:
-Get up immediately if you fall, it is dangerous to remain on the ice after a fall.
-Kicking the ice surface will not be tolerated as it is dangerous to other skaters.
-Gum and food is not allowed on the ice surface.
-Please keep the dressing rooms clean.
-Do not leave valuables in the dressing rooms.
-Skaters are not allowed to sit on the boards at any time.
-Skaters are asked not to loiter on the ice – you are hampering other skaters.
